Student work from my Photo Workshop

Thought people might like to see these... and see some of my assignments from Digital photo workshop I do every spring for 2 weeks.

Abstract film without actors (SPLIT SCREEN)
For this film there are no actors, only images, the screen is split and movement happens, details are shown, we read into it a loose narrative of a place, of a time, of color, form, relationships. You will make a diptych, meaning two photographs butted against each other to form a new relationship both in content and composition. Something should inspire you; perhaps it is the metallic gray of a sky with the close-up of a shovel. Or the circle of a tire covered in mud and the dust on the cover of an antique watch.

The INTERVIEW
What moment in the interview are you documenting, what was said, why, what are the emotions, where does it take place, what is the drama. What objects are with the person? Are you showing both people, just one, why?

One-Minute Sculptures/ Hunting for Gabriel Orozco
This is a moment in the film where something odd is happening, a woman’s hands are on a man’s body with five pencils balanced and pressed against his chest, the light outside is fading, there is activity in the world around this, but we are wondering what is happening? Make your own one-minute sculpture, or build your own moment like Orozco that has reshaped the world.

Staged performance/ Tableau photograph
This movie has been extremely visually powerful but it has a complex and difficult fantastic narrative. This movie requires you to take a leap of faith. There is a man standing in front of the open refrigerator at midnight, the lights are out in the room, there is a pool of milk on the floor and for some reason a tent with children in the kitchen reading by flashlight. Make your own scene, which speaks in the language of fairytale, modern myth, or alternative reality.

The scene after the incident
Everyone is tired, and wrapped in blankets, the car door is open and a girl is pacing on the phone, she is screaming for an ambulance, the headlights point at an old man who looks lost standing in his bathrobe. He is looking at something we cannot see but know he is upset. In this project something has happened that will forever change them. Give us clues.
